The indie explosion that’s been going on for 30 years (give or take)

Polygon has kindly published an excerpt from Handmade Pixels.

This is an excerpt from my history chapter, “A selective History of Independent Games”. My concern here is the prehistory of independent games and the central question: is independent game development new or old?

  1. had missed that your book came out. Added to my queue. Looking forward to reading it.

Agreed that the indie history is as long as that of video games themselves. Not sure if the book gives longer treatment to it than the excerpt, but I’d have liked to see some acknowledgement of there being indie games scenes in many different areas globally (demo scene in scandinavia, doujin-soft in Japan, etc).

  2. Hi Kim

    Thanks for the comment.
The book is really long by my standards, but I had to keep it focused on festivals, so there are just small nods to the demo scene and to doujin games. I hope someone else will write more about them!
