(For the sake of truth, not beauty.) Here are two time lapses from the beginning and the end of a level of <em>Asteroids<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesperjuul.net\/ludologist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/asteroids-lapse-begin.png\" title=\"Asteroids beginning\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jesperjuul.net\/ludologist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/asteroids-lapse-begin.thumbnail.png\" alt=\"Asteroids beginning\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesperjuul.net\/ludologist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/asteroids-lapse-end.png\" title=\"Asteroids end\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jesperjuul.net\/ludologist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/asteroids-lapse-end.thumbnail.png\" alt=\"Asteroids end\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is the same for <em>Defender<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesperjuul.net\/ludologist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/defender-start.png\" title=\"Defender start\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jesperjuul.net\/ludologist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/defender-start.thumbnail.png\" alt=\"Defender start\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesperjuul.net\/ludologist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/defender-end_modified.png\" title=\"Defender end\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jesperjuul.net\/ludologist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/defender-end_modified.thumbnail.png\" alt=\"Defender end\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The aim here was to illustrate how the spatial layout of each game changes during a level &#8211; this is part of a piece for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacetimeplay.org\/\">Space Time Play<\/a> anthology.<\/p>\n<p><em>Asteroids<\/em>  goes from few large rocks &gt; many small rocks. The <em>Defender<\/em> images are not quire as revealing, but the radar shows how aliens are initially distributed throughout the world, but hone in on the player at the end of a level.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gameology pointed me to Rosemarie Fiore&#8217;s long exposure shots of old arcade games.
