I keep<\/a> returning<\/a> to<\/a> this question: When we play a game, are we free –\u00a0 or are we prisoners of the game rules?<\/p>\n

Here is\u00a0Playing<\/a>, my contribution to Henry Lowood and Raiford Guins’ wonderful Debugging Game History<\/a> collection.<\/p>\n

In the piece I argue that there are four main conceptions of the act of game-playing, going from playing as submission to playing as creation.<\/p>\n

\n

1. Playing as\u00a0submission<\/b>, where the player is bound by the limits set forth by the game rules.<\/p>\n

2. Playing as\u00a0constrained freedom<\/b>, where the game creates a space in which players acquire a certain amount of freedom and the opportunity to perform particular acts.<\/p>\n

3. Playing as\u00a0subversion<\/b>, where the player works around both the designer\u2019s intentions and the game object\u2019s apparent limitations.<\/p>\n

4. Playing as\u00a0creation<\/b>, where the game is ultimately irrelevant for (or at least secondary to) the actual playing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
