{"id":205,"date":"2005-08-15T12:27:13","date_gmt":"2005-08-15T10:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jesperjuul.dk\/ludologist\/?p=205"},"modified":"2005-08-15T12:28:02","modified_gmt":"2005-08-15T10:28:02","slug":"windows-vista-and-osx-intel-threats-to-gaming-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jesperjuul.net\/ludologist\/2005\/08\/15\/windows-vista-and-osx-intel-threats-to-gaming-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows Vista and OSX Intel: Threats to Gaming History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A sizable portion of video game history is going to be rendered inaccessible to the average user within the next few years:<\/p>\n<p>According to Eweek, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/article2\/0,1895,1585522,00.asp\">Windows Vista will not be able to run 16-bit programs,<\/a> so Windows 3.1 programs, and many DOS programs (most? all?) will cease to work once you install upgrade to Vista.<\/p>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s switch to Intel chips also means <a href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/Intel+deal+may+mean+end+to+OS+9+support\/2100-1045_3-5734410.html\">the end of OS 9 support<\/a>, so all your pre-2001 Mac games are not going to work anymore.<\/p>\n<p>We will still be able to play old games in the future by running various emulators and virtual machines, but it will be out of reach for most users.<\/p>\n<p>11 years from the release of Windows&#8217;95 to not supporting Windows 3.1 is a very short time in culture, but 5 years from the release of OSX to not supporting OS9 is the blink of an eye.<\/p>\n<p>These are corporate decisions that could be reversed. Somebody should stage a campaign.
