{"id":129,"date":"2004-10-21T12:56:26","date_gmt":"2004-10-21T10:56:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jesperjuul.dk\/ludologist\/?p=129"},"modified":"2004-10-26T10:53:41","modified_gmt":"2004-10-26T08:53:41","slug":"breaking-the-curse-of-the-bambino-do-you-believe-in-losing-streaks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jesperjuul.net\/ludologist\/2004\/10\/21\/breaking-the-curse-of-the-bambino-do-you-believe-in-losing-streaks\/","title":{"rendered":"Breaking the curse of the Bambino &#8211; do you believe in losing streaks?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Baseball: The Boston Red Sox <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/sports\/baseball\/redsox\/articles\/2004\/10\/21\/red_sox_chase_history\/\">finally beat the New York Yankees to make it to the World Series<\/a>.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s one of the interesting things around sports, the myth-making, the belief in winning streaks, losing streaks, and curses.<br \/>\nIn this case, the Red Sox may have broken &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curse_of_the_Bambino\">The curse of the Bambino<\/a>&#8220;, which is the idea that the Red Sox were cursed because they sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1918 &#8211; and true enough, Red Sox haven&#8217;t won the world series since.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps all this because it&#8217;s hard to understand &#038; predict why one team wins the match, but we humans cannot prevent ourselves from seeing patterns everywhere, curses, magic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: There&#8217;s a New York Times piece where the writer explains that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/10\/26\/science\/26quan.html?ex=1256529600&amp;en=ff75feee8b6bd4db&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland\">the Red Sox always lose if he watches them play<\/a>.
